Public Arts Projects
Details of some of the commissions for public art I have completed.
Bill Shankly Centenary Banner (2013)
This vitreous enamel banner was commissioned by East Ayrshire Council to celebrate the centenary of Bill Shankly, the legendary Liverpool Football Club Manager (1959 - 1974), who was born in the mining village of Glenbuck, East Ayrshire.
The design was made in collaboration with John Crosby of Seelevel Design, who also fabricated the metal banner and seating. The vitreous enamelling was applied by Trico VE Ltd : this was a successful collaboration and included the input of art work from local school children.
Bill Shankly is highly revered by Liverpool supporters and we wished to reflect this in the design by celebrating his remarkable popularity, as well as what he achieved as an outstanding football manager of his day. The site of the banner is the Heritage Park in Muirkirk, which is the nearest town to Shankly’s birth place, which no longer exists.
Darvel Lace Project
A series of six benches commissioned by East Ayrshire Council to commemorate the once thriving lace industry of the Irvine Valley, East Ayrshire. The design of the ‘lace’ panels for the benches was made in collaboration with Vanessa Card, John Crosby and school children from Darvel Primary School. Using the children’s drawings, each bench tells an illustrated story about an aspect of the local lace industry, which reached its peak of productivity in the late 19th century.
The panels are made out of laser cut stainless steel and formed to ‘drape’ over each bench, which are made out of galvanised steel.
The benches were installed in Morton Park, Darvel in November 2014
